In New Jersey, the local municipality is the conduit for billing and collecting taxes due for school and county taxes.
The property tax is measured and determined by property values and is apportioned among taxpayers according to the assessed taxable value of the property. The amount of the property tax is determined each year to meet the budgetary requirements of the county, local fire districts, local and regional schools and the municipality.
The Tax Assessor is responsible for valuing all properties within the Township for the purpose of taxation. The assessor utilizes recognized appraisal industry methods which include the sales comparison, cost and income approach to valuation. It is important that each assessment is accurate and conforms to uniform standards ensuring that each individual property owner pays only their fair share of the tax burden. The Tax Assessor, in addition to being responsible to the taxpayers of Franklin Township, reports to the Gloucester County Board of Taxation and the N.J. State Division of Taxation.
