CONTAMINATED SITES COMMITTEE

Meeting February 12, 2007,
Franklin Township Community Center

Present: Nora Craig, Kevin Kelton, Suzanne McCarthy, Jay Mounier, Peter Petrowich, Deborah RoyRoberts

The Contaminated Sites Committee is a committee of the Environmental Commission and will report to the Commission and to the Township governing body. In its work, it will seek information as a representative of Franklin Township.

Vision: Franklin Township is a clean, safe community free of contaminated sites, with an informed and knowledgeable citizenry that acts to prevent contamination

Mission: To assist the government of Franklin Township to control and eliminate contaminated sites within the community and to educate residents on preventative practices.

Goals:
1. To identify and describe contaminated sites
• Obtain existing files and information on existing contaminated sites and their remediation status, focusing primarily on the Known Contaminated Sites list
• Track information on and regulatory response to wells that have been identified as having exceedances of drinking water standards, especially by known hazardous substances
• Determine and initiate a process for reviewing the Sites of Concern list to develop additional accurate information, and any actions required

2. To compile information on contaminated sites for use by township government and staff
• Investigate database systems for use in storing information
• Develop recommendations for use and regular updating of database
• Assist township staff in utilizing database, as needed

3. To educate about contaminated sites, hazardous substances, well testing, and land use practices relating to contamination and about prevention of contamination
• Compile information on Known Contaminated Sites that is accessible to the public through township website or other means
• Develop educational information for use by township leadership and staff
• Develop educational information and programs for use in the community

4. To assist in promoting successful remediation of contaminated sites
• Develop sources of information that will assist owners of contaminated site lands
• Investigate and provide recommendations on actions that Franklin Township can take to move forward the remediation of Known Contaminated Sites
