NJDEP # 133966—Soil and Groundwater Contamination

Summary: NJDOT Rt. 47 Sites 1-6
This "site" consists of an approximate 1-mile stretch of Route 47 in Malaga (Gloucester County) that encompassed a roadway widening and improvement project, and it was subjected to remedial investigation and some remedial actions during construction activity.
The Areas of Concern were designated as seven (7) properties/businesses along the route that were affected by the road widening: Cumberland Farms, WaWa, Riggins Service Station, Mike's Lawnmower Shop, Malaga School, Exxon Service Station, and DAS Automotive. Several USTs were removed at various AOCs to accomodate the project, and some contaminated soil and groundwater had to be extracted. Removal of the tanks and contaminated soils has been completed. Contaminants were petroleum hydrocarbons and some trace metals. Documentation of the removal/disposal/clean up was provided to DEP by Envirogenics in 2006.

Update: NJDOT Rt. 47 Sites 1-6
June 15, 2007-Katie Venner, Intern, NJDEP Site Remediation Office of
Community Relations provides update. Removal of the tanks was completed and
the documentation of the removal/disposal/clean up was to be provided to the
NJDEP by Envirogenics, Inc. The NJDEP and the NJDOT has not received a copy of
the Envirogenics, Inc. report to date. No NFA (No Further Action) has been
issued and the case is still considered active.
AOC 1- Former Malaga School had a 2000 gallon UST removed prior to transfer
of ownership.
AOC 2- Residential or small business office had three 500-gallon UST's removed
